Carey faces elimination at NAIA World Series after 7-3 loss to Westmont

From Internet Reports

LEWISTON, Idaho – William Carey University hit a bump in the road Tuesday night at the NAIA World Series.

Westmont (Cal.) spotted the Crusaders three runs in the second inning, then slammed the door shut on the way to a 7-3 victory in a clash of the two remaining undefeated teams in the Series field.

The loss drops No. 4 seed Carey (49-10) into an elimination game at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday against host Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). The third-seeded Warriors (46-8) will face Southeastern (Fla.) in the other semifinal contest.

The Crusaders started off in good shape, loading the bases with one out in the top of the first inning, but failed to score, while junior left-hander Dario Herrera got a double play to erase a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning.

Carey kept the heat on against Westmont starter Eric Oseguara in the second inning. With one out, junior Kris Jones walked and junior Brayden Coffey reached on an error.

Junior R.J. Stinson cleared the bases with an opposite-field triple down the rightfield line, and he scored on a single by Bobby Lada for a 3-0 lead.

But it didn’t last. The Warriors came right back in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run rally. A leadoff double and a single put runners at the corners, and a single scored one run and the other was an unearned run on a sacrifice fly after an error.

Westmont tied it up in the fourth and chased Herrera in the process, with freshman Lane Jarreau coming on with two out and two on. The Warriors cashed in with an RBI single to tie the game.

Offensively, Carey did little else against Oseguera, or his replacement Zach Yates, who came on in the sixth.

The Crusaders did not get another runner past second base until the ninth inning, and only had two innings after the second where they put more than one runner on base.

The Warriors took the lead off Jarreau (6-1) with two runs in the seventh after one was out. Back-to-back doubles produced the go-ahead run and a bases-loaded single scored the second run of the inning.

Westmont added two insurance runs in the eighth on a leadoff single, a two-base error on a pickoff attempt and a sacrifice fly, and four walks got another run home.

Carey should have junior right-hander Andrew Shirah available to pitch against Lewis-Clark State (36-17), which stayed alive with an 8-3 win over Taylor (Ind.) Southeastern (57-5) eliminated Indiana Wesleyan 6-4 in Tuesday’s other action.
